1. My workshop for London Surf Film Festival is tomorrow! I’ll be interviewing my pals Becki Coley, Maddie Meadings, Owen Tozer and Chris Nelson on the topics of storytelling and creativity, as well as finding out about their latest projects. Buy tickets here.
Plus! I’ve got two tickets to give away to LS 10 Things readers, so let me know if you want ‘em.
2. On the above - I just watched Becki’s new film Point of Change in preparation for this session. It’s a history of Nias as a surf location, but is also a brilliant, subtle treatise on colonialism and the impact of tourism, among other themes. Right up my boulevard, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. And it just won Best British Film at the festival. Find out more here.
3. Now here’s a great opportunity from my pals at Klattermusen - to celebrate their new film A Different Perspective, they’ve just launched a search for the next up-and-coming snowsports photographer. The comp will judged by Melody Sky, Tero Repo and Daniel Bernstal, subjects of the film and three modern photography greats. Prizes include Klattermusen swag and all-expenses paid trip to Verbier to shoot with the Klattermusen team. Enter by posting to Instagram, using the hashtag #klattermusenADP, and tagging @klattermusen. More here.
4. Congratulations to friend-of-the-show Will Renwick on the release of his new film Taith Galed, in which he runs - up? across? over? - every mountain in Wales. Hell of an effort, and the film is great.
5. As I mentioned on a previous newsletter, I’ve been looking forward to viewing Percy Dean’s film about Lois P, and it is also absolutely brilliant. Watch it above, and keep ‘em peeled for a future podcast chat with Lois.
6. Skiing as socialist birthright, an extension of the left-leaning aim of ‘cultivated leisure’ for all? This take seems to come from a previous century, but I liked the argument set forth nonetheless. More here.
7. My pals at the Outdoor Swimming Society just released a new film about ‘the right to swim’ - watch it above.
8. The latest Surfers Against Sewage report on our water quality is out now, and is predictably depressing/essential reading.
9. Regardless of your views on AI, this campaign is pretty clever - Hope Sogni, the artificially-intelligent launching a campaign for the FIFA presidency on a ‘football governance is broken’ platform. More here.
10. One of the highlights of Kendal for me was seeing Dennis Ranalter and Phil Young interviewed about their new film Descendance. The film is now free to view on YouTube and is completely essential viewing.
Got a story or link you think might work for my weekly Ten Things, which goes out to many thousands of readers each week? Let me know! Enjoyed this dispatch?
