So good Matt. I have been really looking forward to this and I loved the first episode. Cant wait to listen to the next ones. In my opinion the outdoor industry is in serious need of this kind of journalism and to be able to have a space to reflect together on these big themes. Thanks so much for creating that space.

Very kind words my friend, thank you

Brilliantly presented and set up as a series, and a big nod to Ben for the scoring which really set the tonality. Totally gripped and can’t wait for the next episode!

Matthew Barr's avatar

Glad you mentioned Ben's work, it's brilliant eh?

I just listened to episode one and then also read your interview on Sam Haddad’s Substack, you said in that interview that episode 1 almost felt out of date due to the crazy amount of money thrown around by Elon Musk in the US election, I think you also said in episode 1 that $3 billion = about 1/3rd of a US election, but estimates now put the 2024 election at about $16 Billion(!).

I’m not really sure what my point is other than gulping at the huge amount of money and power being wielded by multiple billionaires in comparison to what feels like small numbers that Patagonia is able give away (I think you said $71 Million was the most recent figure?). I hope Patagonia’s example can spur on other companies to do similar things to increase the scale of impact possible.

Matthew Barr's avatar

Thanks Rick. Yep, the points you raise are all key parts of episode 2

Thanks, episode 2 next in my queue to listen to. Sorry if my comment came across as a downer, those numbers of $billions spent are just depressingly wild.

Matthew Barr's avatar

Ha not at all. It's all fair comment and I agree, pointing out the disparity and reality of the numbers is really important.

So good to have such in depth assessment of this transition Matt, thank you.

BTW have you come across https://useo.uk/

Thanks Tim, I haven’t but will check it out.

I know how it feels to spend ages on a creative baby and how much support it means when people celebrate and reshare in the wild. Can we all help to give Matt some ears on this brilliant work?
