Looking Sideways: 10 Things
This week’s ten things I thought were worth passing on
1. I’m very privileged to be this week’s guest on Dan Burgess’s excellent Spaceship Earth podcast.
Dan is a brilliant, empathetic interviewer, so I came away feeling very ‘seen’. Which was nice. I ended up discussing many of the themes and preoccupations that are at the heart of The Announcement (more on this in a forthcoming paid subscriber-only post).

2. David Benedek was on The Bombhole, which was shared all over the shop. I’m lucky enough to count David as an old friend, and I was reminded of this chat we had for Looking Sideways back in 2018, which I thought I would humbly reshare here.

3. Another week, another fantastic BBC radio documentary, this one on 40 years of The Terminator, which explores the incredible prescience of the film now we’re in the AI era.
4. Sending best wishes to close friend of the pod Elias Elhardt, who has banged himself up good and proper. Rest up my friend!
5. I really enjoyed this Sarah Wilson piece on the problems with the whole reductive ‘woke versus anti-woke’ none-argument.
6. Now this is interesting: the US Environmental Protection Agency has finally mandated that 200 US chemical plants will have to reduce toxic emissions linked to cancer - including those connected to chloroprene rubber emissions in Cancer Alley. Which is, of course, the subject of the forthcoming Big Sea documentary. More here.
7. Thanks to everybody who contributed questions to this week’s brilliant Open Thread featuring Sal and Tom from Yonder Surf. Such a fascinating discussion - catch up here (and we still have a prize of a brand new Yulex wettie up for grabs for best question from a paid subscriber 😎).
8. I have also been enjoying this great playlist Tom from Yonder made to support the release of Out of Step - Archers of Loaf FTW!
9. I just finished the best novel I’ve read in quite some time (above). Anybody else read it? It may take me some time to emotionally recover.
I’ve not had a great reading year so far, but as ever, I am posting every book I read this year here on my increasingly neglected Instagram.
