Looking Sideways: 10 Things
Trouble at Outside, a new surf film from Lucy and Maddie, and some recommended listening.
1. “You have hacked the meat off the bone, fired the best minds, and jettisoned all institutional memory”.
Trouble continues to rumble on at Outside. After a round of redundancies, a raft of the title’s most storied writers issued an open letter to the new owners.
2. I heard great things about last year’s Sidetracked Festival, and tickets are now on sale for this year’s instalment.

3. Recommended listening 1: the great William Boyd on Desert Island Discs.
4. Recommended listening 2: The Intercept Briefing on the significance of the Christian right’s endorsement of Trump. (Be warned: this is incredibly depressing and vaguely terrifying)
5. Recommended listening 3: Lucy Small and Maddie Meddings on Finisterre’s Hell or High Water podcast

6. Related (and discussed in Finisterre’s podcast): this year’s Women Of The Sea Film Fund just launched. Finisterre are ‘offering up £10,000 for budding women to tell stories of commandeering their space in the lineup.
What a brilliant initiative - apply here.
7. Related: the trailer for Lucy and Maddie’s new film Ceibo is out now.
8. Gary Stevenson is always worth a watch - especially when he’s discussing tax cuts and inequality with Piers Morgan and the clueless Dave Rubin.
9. Behold - some actual action sports and outdoor journalism!
This is a great overview of what unfolded at the recent cross-country ski world championships in Trondheim, and how competitors and climate activists worked together in the face of a lack of leadership by the event organisers.

10. “You get what you get”
Finally, a truly beautiful and empathetic sentiment from Irish author Marian Keyes.
I just released a new print-only film-only adventure magazine called Revelry Collection. Might be something of interest to your audience. 🏔️
Excellent as always Matt.
Really enjoyed reading the Fast Skier article about Callum (my LS debate mate) and his friends' protest and negotiations. As you said, it's rare but good to read in depth journalism like this, about this. There's a lot of positives to take away but I particularly liked the sly verbal side eye about the US team's race suits picturing melting glaciers... "The squad’s announcement of the design was not accompanied by any specific climate policy proposal."
Good work Julia Kern and teammates, and very good work Folk Mot Fossilmakta.
