Looking Sideways: 10 Things
More Announcement press coverage, a speech for the ages, and Brian Eno on democracy and creativity.
1. I’ve spent a large part of this week doing more press for The Announcement, including interviews with Huck, Wavelength, The Adventure Podcast and The Ski Podcast, which is out today.
It was an interesting conversation about the series (turns out host Iain Martin had is another member of the burgeoning twice-listen club) and the future of skiing and ski resorts in the face of the climate crisis.
I also chatted about my evolving plans to follow The Announcement with a series called The Lift. Have a listen above.
2. The most important speech by a European leader in living memory? French senator Claude Malhuret’s address to the French Senate is rightly going viral for calling out the geopolitical madness unfolding at the behest of the Trump White House. Absolutely essential viewing.

3. A great piece by Simon Usborne in the FT on what Reed Hastings’ private enclave on Powder Mountain says about the future of the ski industry.
4. I saw the Beta Band on their farewell tour in Brighton - if you’d have asked me when that was, I’d have confidently said it was about five years ago, not 21 (!)
Anyway, I’m looking forward to their reunion tour later this year - tickets available here.
5. My old pal Phil Young is the latest guest on the excellent Thank U Snowboarding podcast.

6. Fair play to the brilliant Mountain Gazette, one of the only American outdoor industry titles to actually address the Musk-led cuts currently decimating the Department of the Interior, US Forest Service, and National Park Service.
7. Light in the darkness - I greatly enjoyed this conversation between Brian Eno, Jon Alexander and Bette Adriaanse.
8. News from my pals behind The Big Sea - they’re lining up a global spring tour with screenings and special filmmaker Q&As!
Dates to put in your diary: a special screening at Kudhva on March 29th in association with Kendal Mountain Festival, a US premiere on April 12th, and a Malmo screening on May 20th in association with Nordic Surfers Magazine.
I’m hopping on board as one of the media partners for the tour, and the team are about to announce a significant supporting partner as well. Get tickets for the Kudhva screening here.
9. Doughnut Economics just published a suite of new case studies of their approach in action - check them out here, and watch the launch conversation between Announcement guest Erinch Sahan and DE founder Kate Raworth above.

10. An interesting approach to the climate crisis from new start-up Climeta - “leveraging blockchain, cryptocurrency and the digital universe to lead global conservation funding while inspiring our digital generation through immersive experiences, entertainment, and rewards”.
