1. I had such a great time chatting to Chris Burkard in London at the event my agency
organised with our friends at Db.It was also lovely to meet some longstanding listeners and even a guest (nice one Andrew King, ya legend), after previously only corresponding via email or Insta. These live meet-ups/chat are definitely a great idea.
Anyway, I’m releasing the entire conversation with Burkard this coming Sunday exclusively for paid subscribers, so if you’re a paid legend than keep an eye out for that one. Jonathan Weaver, very much a friend-of-the-show, also penned a fun piece about the event for the Db blog, which you can read here.
2. Grab your tickets for the UK premiere of Yama, the new film by Maddie Meddings and Lucy Small, in Newquay on April 1st, here. Lucy and Maddie were also guest of my pal Tyler on this week’s Swell Season podcast as well. Listen here.
3. I really admire the way that Spencer O’Brien has used her position to make increasingly interesting career and creative decisions. Her latest film Precious Leader Woman is out now, and proves that point brilliantly.
4. I know I post too many Guardian links for some readers, but it’s my newsletter so - whatevs really. I also honestly think Jonathan Liew is one of the greats. His piece about the Lineker/BBC saga is peerless, as usual.
5. I’m never quite sure how I feel about the whole extremely played-out ‘skiers and snowboarders climb a mountain’ genre of film. That said, I really enjoyed this, mainly because the camaraderie of the women-only team shines through, and because Marion tells her story with such empathy and humour.
6. The team at Patagonia have been campaigning to save the Vjosa River in Albania for a few years now. It’s been one of CEO Ryan Gellert’s passion projects, for a start. So the news that the river has been designated Europe’s first Wild River National Park is a real breakthrough. Hats off to the team at Earthrise Studios (and previous Type 2 guest Jack Harries, who I chatted to just before he got Earthrise off the ground) for this clever little film they made to help break the news.
7. Centrist Dads assemble! The latest episode of Rory Stewart and Alistair Campbell’s The Rest if Politics podcast is a really fascinating conversation in which Stewart grills Campbell pretty forensically on his role in the Iraq War, and that whole pesky WMD business. Have a listen above.
8. New Owen Tozer work klaxon! This film about (another) friend-of-the-show James Otter for Birkenstock is typically (ahem) lovely stuff.
9. My
pals have been hard at work organising the Action Inspired event we're putting on in London next week. It's invite-only, but I have a few tickets to give away for industry pals. DM me if you fancy it.10. This one comes with a trigger warning (be warned) - Cornish charger Nathan Phillips came a proper cropper recently after snapping his leg during a punchy Porthleven swell. It’s going to be a long old recovery, so Nath’s friends have set up a GoFundMe raffle with some amazing prizes to help him get through the challenging months ahead. Donate here and check Nath’s Stories here to cop a load of the prizes on offer.
Hope you enjoyed this week’s selection. Leave a comment, or if you’re paid subscriber legend who has any feedback or questions about the newsletter or recent episodes of the podcast, you can contact me directly in the subscriber chat thread below.
Andrew King is a human with big heart, big plans, and bigger the challenges which are worth fighting for.
