If you want to trial a paid subscription, there’s a really simple way: just forward this to five friends using the button below, and if they sign up free or paid, you’ll get three months paid sub free. Easy.
And if you’re enjoying what I do and think more people should know about it, it’s also just a quick, simple way of spreading the word
1. My pals and partners at Goodrays have been in touch with an offer for Looking Sideways subscribers - 20% off any drinks until the end of (Sober) October. Use the code OCTOBER20 at checkout here.
2. My creative right hand man Owen Tozer just launched his new webshop! Have a gander here, and read his recent blog for me on taking better phone pics below:
3. Big up Skateboard GB for the thoughtful, nuanced way they’re handling skateboarding’s Olympic evolution: their latest The Thing (above) is a case in point. Not easy to get this stuff right, and you can tell the passion and thought that has gone into this.
4. Congratulations to my old pal Goetz Werner on his brilliant new film Race to the Summit, which launched on Netflix this week. Check the trailer above.
5. Like everybody, I’ve been fascinated by the unfolding car crash that is the Sam Bankman-Fried story. For me, one of the most fascinating details is that Moneyball writer Michael Lewis had spent the six months prior to FTX’s implosion shadowing SBF for his latest book. Check the New Yorker story here.
6. The Fifty is back for another must-see new season. Watch the feature-length season opener above (tis worth it).
7. Inexplicably confident industry bro weighs into culture war issue he clearly knows nothing about, part 5492.
7. Couple of things from the opposite side of my particular political divide I found interesting this last week - a Novara Media podcast with academic Matthew Goodwin (above) in which he argues, completely unconvincingly, that a university-educated ‘leftist elite’ are running the world (my blood pressure took a while to recover, which I rather think was the point).
And a rather more sober BBC documentary about the theory of the Great Replacement, an idea that fuels much right wing discourse, which you can listen to here.
8. This new Bode Millar backed documentary tackles an interesting subject - the high rate of depression and suicide in glitzy ski towns, which of course are at the sharp end of most societal issues we face these days. Watch the trailer above.
9. Dream job alert! My pals at Patagonia are hiring. Find out more here.
10. Finally - I am interviewing the great Ray Barbee this week! Got a question for the legendary skater and musician? Let me know in the comments!
Got a story or link you think might work for my weekly Ten Things, which goes out to many thousands of readers each week? Let me know!
