Looking Sideways: 10 Things
Here are this week's ten things I thought were worth sharing
1. Devastating to hear that the Hayden Shapes factory in Mona Vale has burned down. I was lucky enough to visit the place in December 2017, and had a great day with owner Hayden Cox as he showed me around and we recorded this episode.
2. Congratulations to Cole Nowicki on the publication of his new book about ‘the history and cultural impact of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’, which you can order here. I’ve been saying for a while that Cole is my favourite writer on skareboarding, so am looking forward to checking this out.
3. I thought this recent post from Misc Adventures Digest, about the difficulty of living an honest creative life with integrity, was great. Give ‘em a follow.
4. I so enjoyed listening to Billy Bragg on Adam Buxton, an empathetic vision of left-leaning patriotic Englishness that owes as much to George Orwell and Laurie Lee as it does to his hero Woody Guthrie. We need more voices like Billy’s these days, I reckon.
5. Get well soon Gee Atherton. Pretty fascinating to see the reaction to his crash and injuries in light of the recent discussion around why women still aren’t able to ride at Rampage. Catch up to that below:
6. As a 47 year-old Manchester United fan from Stretford who is the same age as the subject, the Beckham doc might have been specifically created for me in some kind of fiendish AL-tooled algorithmic lab (I enjoyed it, in other words).
That said, I agree with the criticisms in this review which you can read here.
7. Þorlakshöfn’s legendary right hander is under threat. Find out more here.
8. One of the themes I’m exploring in my forthcoming Patagonia documentary The Announcement is the concept of ‘woke capitalism’ and whether it is a threat to democracy, so I found this piece by friend of Looking Sideways sam haddad very interesting indeed. 9. Congrats to friend-of-the-show Ben Skinner on his 3rd place at the recent WSL longboard champs in Malibu.
