Looking Sideways: 10 Things
Ed Templeton (yes, that one), our ACM Pond Skim, and a beautiful mix.
1. Sometimes, making Looking Sideways is truly great. And last night was one such occasion, when I got to interview a proper hero from my youth (can you tell by my expression?, the great skateboarder, artist, photographer and business owner Ed Templeton.
This was a really poignant and funny conversation about aging, the impermanence of possessions, formative influences, Ed’s take on Toy Machine’s longevity, and the secret to a long and happy marriage. Out next week.
2. OK, so it turns out I jumped the gun about Thomas Campbell’s Yi-Wo premiere which is now taking place between Friday 10th and Sunday 12th October! Click here to watch the film and a special pre-screening q&a with TC. You can watch it as many times as you want this weekend; after that it’s for sale via Thomas’s Vimeo.
3. So Gilles Peterson’s specially-designed, three-level listening shed/man cave looks pretty special.

4. NTS Radio is such a brilliant free resource if you need a) new music and b) a lovingly-compiled act of artistic curation in your life (and honestly, who doesn’t?)
It’s the type of station where you find yourself listening to an hour-long mix of experimental Irish underground music, as I did the other day, and I really can’t recommend it highly enough.
5. No more WTF! Marc Maron has one episode of his none-more-influential podcast series to go. This penultimate instalment, in which Maron discusses how he’s been driven by ‘urgency, and the need to be heard’, is quite the emotional tour de force.
Every interview pod in the world (and definitely this one) owes Maron a large debt, that’s for sure.
6. The Sora update signals the true arrival of the era of ‘AI slop’, according to this scathing Vox piece.
Use my code LOOKINGSIDEWAYSDB for 15% off anything from Db.
7. Next year’s Social Skate Summit looks worth keeping an eye on.
8. A fascinating and at-times unsettling podcast about the most controversial British politician of the post-war era (which is obviously saying something, but I think a fair statement).
9. Plenty of disquieting arguments around social media, democracy and populism for a card-carrying carrier of the (checks notes) woke mind virus such as myself.
10. Finally, another mention for the event my agency
is running for our client Icebreaker in London on Saturday October 11th (that’s tomorrow if you open this newsletter the day I send it, which most people do) - London (and I’m pretty sure the world’s) first in-the-city pond skim. It’s free to attend, you can ride or ski if you want (sign up here), and it really should be quite a laugh. Hope to see some friendly faces down there!
Thanks for reading and supporting Looking Sideways! If you have any thoughts about any of the stories I discuss this week, let me know:
I was excited about these 10 things at number one, but the shed is sooo good 😌
