Looking Sideways: 10 Things
This week: Raygun, a bonus Insights pod, and a brilliant piece on the riots.
1. This week’s Insights post is an exclusive podcast discussion with Charlie Dark MBE, RaD’s Dan Adams, photographer Dani KM, and Db Art Director William Koitrand, recorded live in London at our last live Creative Exchange.
The subject? Creativity and Community in the Age of AI. My three panelists shared their views on what the rapidly-changing technological landscape will mean to them, their communities - and the creatives of the future looking to follow in their footsteps.
This one got a bit feisty - if you’re a paid subscriber, don’t miss it.
2. This, via the must-subscribe
, is probably the best thing I’ve read about the riots.3. Related: I’m by no means a fan of Ash Sarkar. And I am very much not a fan of Matthew Goodwin, who I think is one of the most cynical and disingenuous commentators on race and immigration operating in the UK right now.
But their recent Radio 4 Moral Maze debate is an interesting reflection of the ‘both sides’ of the argument around the recent riots.
4. New work from Owen Tozer! An important, must-watch new film out.
5. Thanks to friend-of-the-show Calum for sharing Apayauq, a short film by Zeppelin Zeerip about the first transgender woman to complete the Iditarod sled race.

6. Amid all the post-Olympic euphoria, trust friend-of-the-show Phil Young to ask a searching question: does Team GB still have a diversity problem?
7. Where to start with Raygun?
What a tale - nepotism; hubris on the grandest of scales; the ridiculousness of academic echo chambers; cultural appropriation, systemic failure (hello the Australian Olympic committee); the apotheosis of the participation-versus-excellence debate; the high watermark of the mainstream-versus-alternative culture clash that has been rumbling on since snowboarding debuted at Nagano in 98: it really is all here.
And it has almost guaranteed that for breaking won’t be invited back to future Olympic Games, by the sounds of it.
Quite a few minute’s work.
8. A lovely short to celebrate Anna DeMonte’s ski FKT on Mont Blanc.
9. Tickets are now on sale for the second day of the inaugural Tremula Festival at the Sallis Benney Theatre, Brighton for a full programme of live shows ‘combining the power of audio with a love of the outdoors’.
Shows include Wild For Scotland, Earth Sea Love, Out Outdoors and Board Women, as well as music from Brighton-based band Bird In The Belly. Grab ‘em here.
10. It’s 50 years since Richard Nixon resigned over the Watergate Scandal. This documentary looks back at the scandal, and evaluates Nixon’s legacy today. Recommended.
What did I miss? What did you think?
The plastic in blood has not yet caught fire in terms of public consciousness but I predict it will be a central topic in human health in say 10 years time. Clever film.
As usual Phil Young's take is instructive. Another bold (read reckless) prediction I am going to make is that there will be push back against prodigies that have parents that went the extra mile to give their kids a leg up in the culture of their chosen sport. In the surfing world there are parents that have moved countries and funded seemingly endless travel to give the kids the best possible opportunities to achieve an excellent level. Without even thinking about it I can list Jermey Flores, Sky Brown, Leo Fioravanti and Brisa Hennessy as current beneficiaries.
Liked the article on Raygun. Proves once again that the actual community seems like a far better place than the mainstream ridicule tsunami.
