Looking Sideways: 10 Things
This week: a brilliant new record, geeky political Reels, discounts for session at The Wave, and the (reputedly) bogus connection between outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.
1. Save the date! Im joining forces with my pals at Db to hold a LIVE Creative Exchange in London on Thursday June 13th. I’ll be interviewing a panel of guest on the topic of ‘Community and creativity in the age of AI’.
This will be free and the usual treasure trove of creative insight and experience from our assembled panelists. More to follow, but in the meantime - wack that date in the diary.
2. I’ve had the new Beak> record on repeat.
3. Who knew that posting an incredibly geeky video about First Past the Post, the UK electoral system, as I did the other day, would strike such a chord. Yes, I have had a shave since.
4. Hat tip to friend-of-the-show Tristan Kennedy for sharing this intriguing (and old) High Country News article on the bogus (as the writer contends) connection between outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.
To illustrate it, here’s a nice pic I took the other day of some storks hanging out near where I live in Normandy.
5. I’m enjoying Will Cockrell’s new book on the ‘business’ of Everest enormously. We’re going to be chatting for a future episode of Looking Sideways; stay tuned.
6. Plenty of people have sent me links to Brandalism’s new campaign taking aim at Shell’s sponsorship of surfer Sage Erickson and British Cycling. More on the former at the link above.
7. Now here’s a worthy initiative - World Ocean Day for Schools, endorsed by the UN Ocean Dcecade and offering teachers and pupils a free day of activities. More here.
8. One name that came up again and again while I was researching and recording The Announcement - Kate Raworth of Doughnut Economics. So I enjoyed this chat between Kate and Sarah Wilson on the latter’s Wild with Sarah Wilson podcast.
9. My pals at design agency Robot Food have an interesting stance on the ‘racket’ this is design and advertising awards, as they explain in this Creative Boom feature.
10. Finally - with my time in Normandy coming to a close this time around, normal Looking Sideways service will resume once again.
Starting with: a forthcoming Open Thread with close friend-of the-show, Wave founder Nick Hounsfield, who will be taking your questions on entrepreneurship, Blue Health, his decade long mission to bring The Wave to life, plans for more Wave sites around the UK, and anything else you want to ask him.
As ever, there’s a brilliant prize for best question from a paid subscriber (and congrats to paid subscriber Alice Brown, who won a Db backpack for participating in the last Open Thread).
Plus! Welcome The Wave to HKC Discount Club! Yep, my close friends at The Wave have joined my other partner brands Finisterre, Stance, Albion, Vivo and Db to offer Looking Sideways listeners and readers yet another an exclusive discount code: this one offering 10% off ANY session at our favourite inland lake. Just drop the code SIDEWAVES10 at checkout to get the goods.
