Looking Sideways: 10 Things
This week: cocaine hippos, how climate change is impacting one LA community, and the great Steve Silberman remembered.
1. Many thanks to Dan Trapp for featuring me as this week’s guest on the Sports+Outdoor Mentors podcast, a conversation that largely focused on my career as a journalist, and as co-founder and co-owner of All Conditions Media.
This one was filmed, so you can watch it above if you’re so inclined, or just listen to on Apple Podcasts (below).
I was super impressed with Dan’s approach, and the amount of time, passion and effort that goes into what is clearly a bit of a labour of love. There are now 30 episodes of the Sports+Outdoor Mentors Podcast, during which Dan has gleaned insights from some of the most visionary leaders (as well as me lol) in the outdoor industry.
If you like what I’m doing with Insights, you’ll enjoy this.
2. Chloe Grace Laws on the horrifying stories of Rebecca Cheptegei and Gisèle Pélicot is essential reading.
3. I was really saddened to learn about the death of Steve Silberman. His Neurotribes, is undoubtedly the best book written about autism, and is essential reading.
As a fellow David Crosby geek, I also really enjoyed his Freak Flag Flying podcast series from a few years ago.
Steve was a hugely inspirational figure who will be much-missed.

4. This excoriating blog by Jonathan Porrrit on Unilever’s ‘sustainability u-turn’ is on topic for many of the themes I explored during The Announcement, and is a thoroughly depressing yet necessary read.
5. New work by Owen Tozer! His brilliant new video for Hiatus is a must-watch.

6. Close friend-of-the-show Hannah Bailey went to the Paris Olympics, and came back with this typically trenchant insight about the gender imbalance among sports photographers.
7. I enjoyed this Helen Lewis piece about Trump’s ‘Red-Pill Podcast Tour’ (or ‘dipshit outreach strategy’, as Max Reed puts it).
8. Pablo Escobar’s renegade hippos are wreaking environmental havoc in Colombia’s Magdelena River.
9. How unprecedented landslides have impacted this exclusive Californian suburb.
10. One of the most interesting consequences of me posting the second part of my How Creative Influencers REALLY Make Money series was the debate it sparked about unpaid work over on Instagram.
Regulars will know I’ve covered this topic extensively over the years, firstly in this comprehensive Open Thread, as well as in the Insights piece below, both of which I thought were worth sharing again here.
I can feel a follow up blog coming on….
Finally - this week’s Insights blog featuring Sidetracked publisher John Summerton, who shared the creative lessons he’s learned from ten years at the helm of the UK’s most influential outdoor title, is free-to-read. I wanted to give free subscribers a look at what Insights subscribers are getting every week as part of their subscriptions. Have a gander at the link above.
What did I miss? What did you think of this week’s list?
"Pablo Escobar’s renegade hippos" would make a great band name.
