Looking Sideways: 10 Things
A brilliant exhibition, more Announcement press, and a must-listen podcast series.
1. Exciting news! I’ve partnered up with my pals at The Big Sea as official media partner on their forthcoming global film tour! The first round of dates has been announced, and includes screenings in Newquay, San Francisco, Exeter, Brighton, Newcastle, Brittany, Antwerp, Kiel, Malmo and Paris, with more dates to follow. Each showing will be preceded by this brand new Announcement trailer (above), which as ever has been expertly compiled by my pals Owen Tozer and Ben Townsend.
As you’ll know if you’ve been following me for a while, I’ve been tracking The Big Sea story for a few years now. And there are many similarities between what Demi, Chris and Lewis are trying to do with their film, and what I do with Looking Sideways and, latterly, The Announcement, that makes this partnership such a great fit.
Ultimately, we’re both trying to tell interesting, important stories that wouldn’t find an audience anywhere else, which is why I’m so chuffed to support the film tour in this way.

2. Huge thanks to my pals at Wavelength Magazine for this really thoughtful and in-depth piece on The Announcement.

3. Komoot has been sold to a tech firm - Bike Radar picks over the debris in this piece.
4. How Trump’s Ukraine ‘deal’ risks normalising what has been geopolitically taboo since the Second World War - territorial conquest by stronger states.
5. Reams have been written about Adolescence over the last couple of weeks - what has gone slightly under the radar is how cleverly and subtly the series has been marketed, as amply demonstrated by this lovely Stephen Graham and Ashley Walters piece.
6. Amazing what the internet throws up every now and again - like a piece for the Independent on the (*checks notes*) hip new activity of ‘wild swimming’ I’d completely forgotten I’d written. (That subhead also confirms the unruly power of a misplaced hyphen)

7. Love this - OG Brit skate company Rollersnakes have gone employee-owned. This year also marks the firm’s 40th anniversary, and there’s a host of events planned to mark this significant milestone.
8. Empire’s Ireland series is brilliant anyway- but Patrick Radden-Keefe on The Troubles makes it really essential listening.
9. Congratulations to Sam Bleakley on Surf!, his exhibition showcasing 100 years of wave-riding in Cornwall. It’s on at the National Maritime Museum, and I can’t wait to check it out next time I’m down in the Duchy.

10. The deaths of Jeff Keenan, Alex Pashley and Jason Remple mean this has been a devastating week for the snow community.
Grim news about komoot, isn't it? I think what Bending Spoons did to Evernote is a pretty bad sign.
