If you want to trial a paid subscription, there’s a really simple way: just forward this to five friends using the button below, and if they sign up free or paid, you’ll get three months paid sub free. Easy.
And if you’re enjoying what I do and think more people should know about it, it’s also just a quick, simple way of spreading the word
1. Surf legend Taylor Knox there, sporting a Looking Sideways tee. And the good news is that if you want to make like Taylor, I’ve updated the Looking Sideways perch range with plenty of autumnal goodies, just in time for the mercury to dip.
The even better news is that if you’re based in the UK you can snag free shipping until midnight on Sunday! What are you waiting for? Get stuck in here.
2. Just an eight year-old with a 720, 540 and 900 in one vert line (and the caption from Clyde cracked me up).
3. This by
is the best thing I’ve read on Russell Brand.4. Good to see The Big Sea story finally getting some international traction, with Stab and Beach Grit the latest to belatedly wake up to the topic. As you’ll know if you’ve been following the story since I began covering it in November last year, one of the more interesting strands has been the reluctance of ‘legacy’ media or brands to go anywhere near the issues raised in the films. Wonder whether this will change now that Stab and Beach Grit (who, interestingly, don’t rely on the old ad-funding model, and so are free to publish what they want) have weighed in.
If you’re not up to date, listen to my episode with Lewis and Chris here, or read Chris’s blog about his five takeaways from making The Big Sea below:
5. Speaking (albeit tangentially) of Big Sea director Lewis Arnold, his recent edit which is well worth a gander.
6 I’m a big fan of
, a clever podcast/magazine format that really makes the most of Substack’s editorial potential. Host/creator Sunny Fassler is delving into the history and culture of key surf destinations such as Bali and Mozambique. Check out the latest episode below:7. I love getting tips from listeners and readers, so keep em coming! The latest was this great podcast about the Woolsey Fires which decimated Malibu back in 2018. (I discussed this at length my pal Jamie Brisick during our second LS conversation here).
8. Occasionally the algorithm throws up something truly special, such as this compilation of Curtis McCann footage by Winstan Whitter which I somehow missed the first time around.
9. The line-up to this year’s Global Wave Conference looks kinda interesting, and there are plenty of friends-of-the-show taking part, like Oli Russell-Cowan, host of the excellent Rad Season podcast. Find out more here.
10. Looks like my pal Erik Traulsen of the FnRad podcast has a bit of a scoop on his hands - a forthcoming double-header with E-Stone and Chris Grenier which digs right into the details of the Bombhole brouhaha. Follow FnRad above to see when the episodes drop - and get the popcorn ready.
Got a story or link you think might work for my weekly Ten Things, which goes out to many thousands of readers each week? Let me know!
